Our mission is to create a safer environment within our community and to provide for an increase in quality of life which our citizens and guest may enjoy. The fire department will strive to provide a wide range of programs and services designed to protect the lives and property of the people of the fire district and guest from the adverse effects of fire, medical emergencies or exposure to dangerous conditions created by either man or nature.
We will provide the highest Quality of Customer Service to the patrons of the Hellsgate Fire District. We intend to provide a rapid response to EMS, Fire and Public Assistance request. We will provide for the highest level of trained personnel, quality equipment and continuing education for the district.
I am honored to serve as the Fire Chief for the Hellsgate Fire District. From day one, I felt warmly welcomed by the Board of Directors, the Business Manager, and the dedicated members of the District. Our team works tirelessly to provide excellent customer service to the community, no matter the type of incident. I am proud to work alongside such committed individuals. As a community, you should know they are working hard for all of you.
My fire career began 45 years ago in 1979 when I joined the City of Phoenix as a firefighter. Over the 37 years there, I advanced through the ranks to become a paramedic, engineer, captain, division chief, and battalion chief. Along the way, I also became certified as a hazardous materials technician, technical rescue technician, incident safety officer, driver training instructor, and fire service instructor.
I have always had a passion for teaching, mentoring, coaching, and training. I have taught EMT and Fire Science within the Department, at Mesa and Central Arizona Colleges, and for various other entities. I look forward to using this experience to impart knowledge to the members of our District.
On a personal note, my wife of 42 years, Jamie, and I have strong ties to this beautiful part of the State. We have a place in Pine, and my in-laws, own the 76 Ranch near Rye. We also lived in the Knolls in 2006, making us quite familiar with the area and its wonderful community.
As Fire Chief, I am committed to providing leadership and doing everything possible to offer the best fire and medical services to the residents. Despite the significant financial challenges facing Fire Districts in the State, we will continue to work with cooperation, forward-thinking, and hard work to overcome these obstacles.
In my professional life, I live by several principles. Dennis Compton once told me that one of your goals as a professional firefighter is to "leave the department better than when you found it." I believe everyone has the duty to follow this mantra, regardless of their role.
Another principle is to "be the answer for those you serve." The Fire Service has evolved significantly over the past 50 years, and we now provide a range of services including medical response, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, and more. We are problem solvers who show up with a large toolbox to provide the best service possible.
Finally, I tell the members of the District, "the most important service we provide is the service we are providing at that time, for that person."
I look forward to meeting more of you. If you have any questions about our work or how we do it, please feel free to call or email me. Be nice and be safe.
Sincerely,
Wes Trayner
